FIXTURES AND RESULTS

Saturday 12th September 2009

COXHOE UNITED 0 v BEAMISH FC 0

This was the first game of the season and the girls began the game very slowly showing that it has been a long time since they have played together competitively. They were not relaxed on the ball and panicked when the ball came near them. This meant that we were put under pressure from the start. Thankfully, Beth Vasey , in goal kept us in the match with some excellent saves. We came out in the second half a bit more awake and Sophie Whiting, Faye Mullen and Sophie Thierney started to control the midfield with some flashes of the flowing passing that we have become to expect from them. The girls started to communicate better and began to get the ball up to Morgan Rouse who had a number of shots saved. We need to compete for every ball and not get pushed off the ball. A draw was a fair result.

Man of the match:- Morgan Rouse

COXHOE UNITED 2 - BIRTLEY TOWN 1

The girls played better in this game, although we were still stretched at times and not attacking the ball as we usually do. A big thanks to Sophie Whiting and Faye Mullen for coming out of their positions for a half and helping the defence. At times we put a lot of pressure on Birtley especially down our right wing with Faye Mullen and Sophie Thierney carrying the ball and feeding it into Morgan Rouse to stretch their goalkeeper ( who is an exceptional talent) Finally Faye Mullen and Sophie Thierney got our two goals in quick succession. We continued to pressure the goal , but kept being caught on the attack. Holly Crozier and Paige Wilson worked their socks off clearing the balls out of our penalty areas so that Beth Vasey did not have a lot to do in goal.

EAST DURHAM 1 - COXHOE UNITED 3

This was a very mature performance from the whole team , they all played as they were asked to.All players showed good control , with some excellent heading from Paige Wilson when clearing the ball from our defending area. The whole team showed superb responsibility when making decisions , with Beth Vasey in goal taking charge of the defence with her consent talking, which meant we were never outnumbered in defence. In the first half the team constantly pressured the East Durham goal. Morgan Rouse terrified the defence with her continued shots on goal. We finally broke through with a lovely taken goal by Phlin Piercy. In the second half the girls continued to pressure with some controlled passes up to the attackers by Sophie Whiting , with Vanessa Stephenson and Faye Mullen using their pace on the wings to bombard the opponents goals with some excellent crosses. The second goal came from Chelsea Thompson who magnificently cleared a pass from just on the edge of her box and sent it flying the whole length of the pitch to finally settle in the back of the net. Our third goal came from Danika Stephenson in her first game for Coxhoe. She picked the ball up on the edge of the penalty area and some great control to change direction and send it into the goal. An excellent performance from the whole team.

Man of the match   Chelsea Thompson

Goals  Phlin Piercy, Danika Stephenson, Chelsea Thompson

COXHOE UNITED 4 - DEERNESS VALLEY 0

The girls were a little concerned by this game as Deerness were the only team they did not beat in their successful cup run last season. However , the team looked a much changed team from last year . Coxhoe started out in the first half looking very sluggish. They allowed Deerness to take charge and put pressure on the defence , with Beth having to make a number of important saves. The midfield tried hard to get the ball up to Morgan but were running with the ball too much and then losing possession. We did manage to get a goal in the first half with again Phlin Piercy following up on a shot to knock the ball in. the the second half we came out much more controlled with us starting to pass the the ball around like we have come to expect from the U12's. They looked a lot more settled from the defence all the way up to the strikers. The defence of Chelsea Thompson, Paige Wilson and new girl Sarah Higgins played some excellent balls out to the midfield with Sophie Whiting positioning the balls for Sophie Thierney and Faye Mullen to run at the opponents. Coxhoe controlled the whole of the second half and finally got the goals we deserved. Sophie Whiting , Faye Mullen and Danika Stephenson all found the back of the net. An excellent weekends work.

Man of the match:- Paige Wilson

Goals:- Phlin Piercy, Faye Mullen, Danika Stephenson, Sophie Whiting

LEAM RANGERS 0 - COXHOE UNITED 2

The gale force wind spoiled the game generally as the girls could not be sure that the ball would go where they wanted it to go. However, despite the difficult conditions the team passed the ball well and kept it under control on the ground with some blistering runs by Plern Piercy on left wing . One of these runs resulted in Sophie Whiting passing the ball back to Plern whose first shot was saved but she followed it up to put it in the back of the net. This was Plern’s third scoring weekend. In the second half the wind began to take its toll on some of the girls legs so we had a bit of a change round allowing Paige Wilson to venture out of defence to play midfield . Sophie again kept the midfield held together with some intelligent passing to access our attack , who continued to hassle Leam’s goal. The girls played well and worked hard for the whole game and in the last five minutes the work paid off with another goal from Danika Stephenson.

Man of the Match:- Paige Wilson

Goals:- Plern Piercy, Danika Stephenson

COXHOE UNITED 0 - LUMLEY LADIES 2

This was a game of top of the table verses third ( us being third). This was always going to be a hard game after the battles the two teams had last season. The team started off a little asleep and let Lumley progress into our penalty area, but Beth Vasey in goal controlled her area and kept us in the game. The girls then woke up and played some mature football passing the ball confidently and under control. They were holding their own when Lumley broke through and just a silly mistake in defence allowed Lumley to take advantage and take the lead. Although being a goal down in the second half with some fresh legs on the team battled relentlessly. A big thank you to Paige who stepped into goal when Beth went off ill. She made some excellent saves. Morgan Rouse worked tirelessly up front trying to equalise with Danika helping her. Luck was just not on our side and a goal would not go in. So in the last five minutes we decided to gamble and left Chelsea Thompson back on her own and pushed everyone up, unfortunately it didn’t work and another goal went to Lumley. This was hard for the girls as it was the first defeat of the season, however they had not given up all game and deserved to get something out of it. Michael and l were so proud of them all.!!!

Man of the match:- Chelsea Thompson

Saturday 10th October 2009

RYHOPE FC 0 - COXHOE UNITED 5

The team started strongly, attacking the Ryhope goal from the off. The midfield of Chelsea Thompson,  Vanessa Stephenson and Plern Piercey made some very good attacking passing moves to get the ball up to Danika Stephenson , who soon got her first goal of the game. Sarah Higgins and Holly Crozier worked hard in defence to allow Beth in goal a very quiet first half, with Sarah making several  very intelligent tackles to set the midfield away on their blistering runs. The second half continued in the same vein , with the only change being to bring on Faye Mullen in centre midfileld. Faye continued to keep the pressure up by adding even more pace to the midfield. In the second half Danika added another three goals to her tally , with Plern also finding the back of the net.

Man of the match:- Danika Stephenson

Goals:- Danika Stephenson x4, Plern Piercey x1

COXHOE UNITED 1 - BEAMISH FC 3

I don’t really know what to write for this report  as this was not a nice game. The girls battled hard against a very physical team who seemed intent on stamping their mark on the game. Sophie Whiting and Faye Mullen tried to control the midfield  with some excellent passing and mature positioning. Beamish took the lead early and Coxhoe tried to play their passing game to get back into , which they did with a great goal by Morgan Rouse. However , in the second half a number of decisions went against us which resulted in us conceding another two goals. Well done to the team by showing the attitude and good manners that we except from teams of Coxhoe United.

Man of the match:- Paige Wilson

Goals:- Morgan Rouse

STOCKTON TOWN GIRLS 0 - COXHOE UNITED 4

The girls started off strongly making every spare ball theirs. They controlled the game right from the off, which was great after their first defeat of the season last week. The midfield of Sophie Whiting, Faye Mullen, Plern Piercy and Vannessa Stephenson after half time dominated the game allowing very few balls to even get to our defence . Paige Wilson in goal hardly touched the ball all match but stayed focused throughout. It was not long before Coxhoe got their first goal from a storming run by Faye down the right wing, who crossed it into the box where it found the boot of Plern for yet another goal. Plern has scored every weekend so far this season. Soon after Faye got her first of the morning with a solo run set up by a lovely pass by Sophie from deep in our half. The second half followed much in the same vein with Faye getting another and Danika Stephenson getting her first of the morning.

Man of the match :- Sophie Whiting

Goals :- Faye Mullen x2, Plern Piercey, Danika Stephenson 1

COXHOE UNITED 7 - CONSETT PREDATORS 0

Again the girls started as they meant to with an early goal from Faye. This set the tone of the game with the midfield dominating even with players playing out of their normal positions so as to give equal playing time. Paige again had very little to do with Sophie and Chelsea Thompson allowing nothing to reach her. The girls showed again what a great passing team they have become with some tremendous runs from defence resulting in a number of goals. They also showed great communication and the ability to hold off players until more support was there. Well done just shows that training is important!! The whole team were excellent in their attitude and work rate. A well deserved result.

Man of the match :- Faye Mullen

Goals:- Faye Mullen x4, Morgan Rouse x2, Danika Stephenson

Also can l just say that the two teams we played this weekend were a credit to their managers/coaches and played the game as it should be in Junior Football.

DEERNESS VALLEY 0 - COXHOE UNITED 4

With only one game this weekend the team had to get into their stride quickly. This they did and again the midfield of Faye Mullen, Sophie Whiting and Plern Piercey soon showed their dominance with Sophie feeding the balls out to the wings and the girls carrying them up the field for some fantastic crosses. It was one of these crosses from Plern which resulted in the first goal from Faye. The team continued to work hard with Danika Stephenson also coming close to scoring several times. The game continued in much the same way in the second half with Plern scoring and Faye getting another two goals. In the dying seconds Deerness broke through our defence but Beth Vasey made a brave fully extended save to keep another clean sheet for the team. Well played by everyone.

Man of the match  Faye Mullen

Goals   Faye Mullen 3, Plern Piercey 1

Saturday 31st October 2009

COXHOE UNITED 1 - EAST DURHAM 0

This was a very well matched game with both teams pressuring for the ball and battling every lose ball. Coxhoe were challenged early in the first half with East Durham breaking through the defence , but Beth Vasey made an excellent save and a powerful goal kick to set our attack up, with Faye Mullen and Morgan Rouse coming close. Coxhoe had another few scary moments when players seemed to panic and made silly mistakes, but Beth kept us in the game. In the second half the team seemed to settle and started to play their usual game with Sophie Whiting setting up some fantastic runs by Faye and Morgan to begin a constant barrage of the East Durham goal, with Morgan finally finding the back of the net.

Man of the match   Faye Mullen

Goal   Morgan Rouse

COXHOE UNITED 2 - RYHOPE CW 2

The girls seemed to have gone to sleep by this game and it was like watching a completely different team. They let Ryhope get the upper hand very early on and it wasn’t long before they found themselves 2 down, not a position that we have been used to recently. However , Beth , Holly Crozier and Sarah Higgins worked hard in defence to keep Ryhope from scoring again. In the second half after a change around the team went out to play for some pride. Sophie and Faye injected some much needed pace into the midfield and with Chelsea Thompson feeding some excellent long balls up to the attack we were soon putting Ryhope under pressure. It was not long before Faye found the net for the first time closely followed by her second. The girls kept up the pressure right to the end trying desperately to gain the win, but it just wasn’t to be.

LUMLEY LADIES 1 - COXHOE UNITED 3

This was always going to be a hard match as Lumley are top of the league and unbeaten this season. The girls were put under a lot of pressure in the first five minutes and looked like they didn’t know how to play football , therefore they soon were one down. However , instead of giving up they all showed great character and picked themselves up and began to organise themselves with Sophie Whiting and Faye Mullen in midfield showing great maturity in their decision making and presence on the pitch for the others to follow. Beth Vasey made some excellent goals to keep us in the game , backed up by some very hard work by Paige Wilson and Sarah Higgins in defence. Our break through came from a lovely goal kick from Beth to set up our attack and Faye crossed a whipping ball in from the left and Plern Piercey got her foot to it. Coxhoe were back in the game. The second half started much like the first, but the girls did not panic and soon settled into their true passing game with Sophie delivering some excellent paces right to the feet of our wingers. Faye and Plern  were making Lumley defence work extremely hard. All the teams hard work paid off when Morgan Rouse and Faye soon put the game beyond Lumleys grasp. Well played to all the team you were excellent.

Man of the match:- Faye Mullen

Goals:- Plern Piercey 1, Faye Mullen 1, Morgan Rouse 1

COXHOE UNITED 5 - LEAM RANGERS 0

The girls went out determined not to spoil their winning streak. They started strongly with an early goal by Faye who again was soon causing great difficulty for Leams defence with her great runs down the wing. All the team worked hard with the defence pushing up and getting involved in the attacks. It wasn’t long before Coxhoe got their second from a good strike from Sophie Tierney. The second half went in the same vein as before with Coxhoe’s defence having very little to do. Goals came this half from Sophie Tierney, Morgan Rouse and Danika Stephenson.

Man of the match:- Morgan Rouse

Goals:- Morgan Rouse 1, Sophie Tierney 2, Faye Mullen 1, Danika Stephenson 1

Saturday 21st November 2009

Coxhoe United 3 v Birtley 0

This was a very confident performance from the girls who dominated the game from the start, with Faye , Sophie W and Plern controlling the midfield with a maturity beyond their years. They continued to push the attack up to Morgan who scored a superb shot. This was closely followed by a goal by Faye. The second half saw a complete change around, but the team continued the strong play of the first half with Danika pressuring the goal continually. We finished the second half with another goal by Faye. A superb performance by all.

Man of the match   Faye Mullen

Goals   Faye Mullen 2, Morgan Rouse 1

Saturday 28th November 2009

Coxhoe United 1 v East Durham 0

This was going to be a close game as East Durham are just below us in the league, and it was a weekend damaged be injury and illness. However , the team went out to win from the start and battled for every ball and pressured East Durham so they could not settled into a rhythm. The game was end to end for the first ten minutes , with Chelsea Thompson and Paige Wilson in defence making sure the ball rarely came through to Beth Vasey in goal. Then the team started to settle into their game with Sophie Whiting dominating the centre of the field making it very hard for East Durham to break through and setting some excellent runs by both Faye Mullen and Plern Piercey on the wings. This hard work continued in the second half with Holly Crozier now working hard in defence with Chelsea. The midfield continued to pressure and send the balls up to Danika Stephenson up front. The shots would not go in and in the last few minutes a mistake by East Durhams defence allowed us to take the lead with an own goal. A well fought game played in an excellent spirit by both teams.

Man of the match  Plern Piercey

Coxhoe United 3 v Deerness 0

The score does not reflect the way the game was played. Deerness put Coxhoe under pressure right from the start and the defence had to make some strong tackles to keep us in the game. The team looked like they had gone to sleep , even when Plern scored a goal it looked like Deerness would come back at any moment. After some truths at half time the girls played the football that we have come to expect from them. They worked really hard with Sophie again creating runs for Faye and Plern to take the ball and run at the defence. Paige Wilson had a change of position venturing out of defence to play midfield and made some excellent runs. She worked so hard that she scored the final two goals. However, everyone deserves the credit for this win as they pulled themselves together  and worked for this win. Well done!!!

Man of the match  Faye Mullen

Goals Plern Piercy, Paige Wilson 2

Saturday 5th December 2009

Leam Rangers 0 - Coxhoe United 2

The team went out strong right from the off with the midfield of Sophie Whiting , Faye Mullen and Sophie Thierney controlling the field and allowing Leam very few opportunities to attack and give our defence anything to do. Sophie Whiting played a very mature game setting some great attacks for the wings to run at Leams players. Danika Stephenson up front worked really hard and hassling the defence constantly. Near the end of the first half Faye broke through the defence to score our first goal. In the second half the girls carried on as in the first with Plern Piercey taking Sophie T place in midfield and ran at leam until they didn’t know were to go to get the ball off her. Faye soon scored her second goal from a low , strongly whipped corner which skipped into the corner of the net. An excellent game by all.

Man of the match Paige Wilson

Goals Faye Mullen 2

Coxhoe United 3 v Lumley Ladies 2

This was always going to be a tough game as Lumley were only 1 point behind us and it is always a hard game when the two teams meet. Lumley started off the stronger putting our defence under pressure right from the start. However, Chelsea Thompson and Holly Crozier dealt with the balls well. Lumley scored within the first five minutes and l thought that was it we were in for a hammering. This was not to be the girls picked themselves up and soon faye had got us back into the game. The midfield of Sophie W, Faye and Plern played their hearts out trying to put the Lumley Defence under pressure. Sophie collected any spare balls and got them quickly back into the attack, and Paige in defence worked her socks off to stop any ball getting near our goal. In the second half Holly stepped into the goal keepers position and again the girls went out to fight for the game , battling for every ball. Sophie Thierney came on to replace Sophie W and her and Plern kept the pressure up . Finally Danika Stephenson got us in front again. However, Lumley were not going to give up without a fight and soon evened the score. Last season Coxhoe might have given up , but not this year. Sophie W came back on just to strengthen up the centre of the pitch and the team went all out for the win. It was so exciting to watch with all the parents getting behind the girls. Sophie Thierney finally found the back of the net in the last few minutes to take the victory. Well played to everyone, it was a realm team effort, parents and supporters included.

Saturday 12th December 2009

COXHOE UNITED 6 - STOCKTON TOWN GIRLS 0

The girls started off strongly with the midfield of Sophie Whiting, Sophie Thierney and Plern Piercey controlling the centre of the field with some excellent passes from Sophie W to set up the runs from the wings. Together with Danika Stephenson up front they pressured the Stockton goal continually, but the goals would not go in . The defence of Paige Wilson and Sarah Higgins( back from injury) kept Stockton from having any real shots on goal. Beth Vasey , in goal made several excellent moves to set up our midfield to allow them to play their favourite passing game. We finally had a break through near the end of the first half with Plern getting her foot to the ball to put us in front. The second half went in the same format with Faye Mullen and Holly Crozier now linking with Sophie W in midfield. The girls continued to play an attacking game and put 5 more goals past Stockton.

Man of the match Holly Crozier

Goals Sophie Thierney 2, Sophie Whiting 1, Holly Crozier 1 , Faye Mullen 1, Plern Piercey 1

Coxhoe United 4 v Birtley 1

This game went in much the same vein as the first match with Coxhoe dominating the play, especially in midfield Sophie T, Faye and Plern playing some very mature passing football. Faye and Plern continued to frighten the opposition with their blistering pace. Beth again worked well in goal organising the defence to make sure she did not have much to trouble her.  Faye and Danika scored the first two goals in the first half after continued pressure on Birtley’s goal. The second half saw Sophie Whiting and Sarah Higgins back on and they continued to do the job started in the first half. Again Faye and Danika scored to put the game beyond Birtley’s grasp. Well done to everyone this weekend you all played your hearts out!!!!

Saturday 6th February 2010

Coxhoe United 7 v Ryhope 1

This was our first game for many weeks so was not sure how we would play. The first ten minutes the team were very rusty making silly mistakes and letting Ryhope get in behind our defence. However, Beth Vasey in goal made sure that no shots at goal went anywhere near. The girls soon settled into their game and took control of the match with the midfield of Faye Mullen, Sophie Whiting and Plern Piercey  producing some excellent passing moves to set Sophie Thierney away to hassle the Ryhope goal. Just before half time we had our first break through with Faye finally getting a shot into the back of the net. The second half started as the first had finished with Coxhoe dominating the game with more goals coming from Faye , Sophie W, Plern  and a hat trick from Sophie T. In the last few minutes Ryhope got a goal back from a miss clearance which fluckely went over Beth’s head . This was an excellent performance from the whole team.

Man of the match Sophie Whiting

Goals Faye Mullen 2, Sophie Whiting 1, Sophie Thierney 3 and one own goal

Coxhoe United 8 - Consett Predators 0

With a different team for the second game the girls still went out to dominate the game. Sarah Higgins and Holly Crozier worked hard and made some excellent tackles to prevent Consett breaking into the defence. Beth in goal had a very quiet game, but still stayed focussed when she had to. Faye, Sophie W and Vannessa Stephenson played the midfield at a blistering pace, working hard to set Danika Stephenson of in sight of the goal many times. Plern Piercey came on at half time and continued the good work that Vannessa had started. I lost track of in which order the goals were scored, but again a very mature performance by all the players.

Man of the Match Sophie Whiting

Goals Sophie Whiting 3, Faye Mullen 1, Sophie Thierney 1, Plern Piercey 2, Danika Stephenson 1

U12 Girls Coxhoe United 2 v Stockton 0

This was a very hard fought game even though Stockton had only 6 players. They made Coxhoe work for every ball and there were several times when the defence of Paige Wilson and Chelsea Thompson had to make some critical tackles and clearances to keep us in game.Plern and Faye worked very hard to keep the midfield moving the ball to give Danika a chance of scoring. Finally after about ten minutes Faye scored to allow the team to relax a little. In the second half Sophie Whiting and Sophie T came on to give us some fresh legs. Sophie W worked hard to secure the centre of the pitch not allowing any balls to come past her and setting the attack away. The second goal came from a lovely shot by Sophie Thierney.

Man of the match Sophie Thierney

Goals Faye Mullen 1, Sophie Thierney 1

Ps This tremendous performance this weekend from the girls means that although they still have two games left in the league they have won the U12 girls league title. May l take this opportunity to thank all the team for their hard work , the parents for their support and Michael for his great coaching!!!

SATURDAY 13TH MARCH 2010

Coxhoe United 2 - Beamish 3

This was a hard match for the team . Beamish started off strongly pressuring our defence from the off scoring an early goal while the team were still trying to settle. We soon lost Beth Vasey our goalie , who was unwell. (thanks to Holly Crozier who stepped into the postion) and then a few mniutes later Sophie Thierney came off also unwell. This seemed to unsettle the girls and Beamish made the most of it putting another goal past us. Sophie Whiting and Faye Mullen worked their socks off trying to get the game back both with their hard work but also with their attitude trying to lift the whole team. Beamish soon had made it 3-0 , but in the last ten minutes the team woke up and began to play like the league winners . Faye Mullen found the back of the net from a lovely cross and then with minutes to spare Chelsea Thompson hit a fantastic shot from way out and found the back of the net. If there had been another ten minutes l think we would have scored again but time was against us.

Man of the match  Chelsea Thompson

Goals  Faye Mullen 1, Chelsea Thompson 1

Coxhoe United 0 - Birtley 0

This was a very fast paced game with the play going from end to end. Holly Crozier made some very good saves to keep the team in the game early on . At the other end Birtleys goalie was superb against many shots from Faye , Sophie , Chelsea ,Paige, PLern and new girl Brodie Grayson. What let us down in this match was our passing and getting to the ball first which is usually our strength. Again Faye and Sophie tried their hardest to get something out of the game finishing with some lovely passing down the centre of thepitch to set each other up , it just was not our day.

Man of the match  Sophie Whiting

SATURDAY 20TH MARCH 2010

Coxhoe United 5 v Consett Predators 0

This week the team went out to prove to themselves tht they could still win after the disappointing defeat of last week. They certainly did that Consett did not know what had hit them with Coxhoe pressuring their goal from the off . The midfield of Faye Mullen , Sophie Whiting and Plern Piercey played some very intelligent football keeping possession until they had produced a hole in the defence to set up a shot at goal. Faye made the first goal after ten minutes when she hit a cross from Plern into the back of the net. Sophie Thierney soon got the second from a rebound. In the second half Beth Vasey came out of goal for a rare run around and Paige Wilson went in. The team continued the job they had started in the first half with another two goals from Sophie Thierney and one for Danika Stephenson.

Man of the match  Faye Mullen

Goals Faye Mullen 1 Danika Stephenson 1 Sophie Thierney 3

Coxhoe United 5 v Consett Rebels 0

By the time we played this game the rain had turned the pitch into a mud bath which made the game very difficult to play as the ball would not run. However the team still continued to play their favourite passing game and adapted excellently to the conditions. Holly Crozier played and excellent game in defence making sure the ball did not make it back to the goal she never gave in and together with Chelsea Thompson made Beths job in goal very easy. The midfield again began to work their magic pressuring every ball. However, Plern Piercey on the left wing had a brilliant game using all her skills to work the ball up the pitch setting up some great cross for the players coming in. One of these crosses allowed Sophie Thierney to score the first goal. The second half played just the same with the team never stopping the pressure put on Rebels. Faye , Paige and Danika all scored with Sophie Whiting, Plern and Chelsea all coming close.

SATURDAY 27TH MARCH 2010

Coxhoe United 1 v East Durham 2

I can not write much about this weekends games as l was not there , but l understand that this was a very hard fought game with East Durham being exremely strong in their play , however the girls did not give in and gave their all.

Goals Danika Stepenson 1

Coxhoe United 9 v Deerness 0

I understand that the team had a big change round of positions in this game with the midfield and strikers playing defence and the defence going up front.

SATURDAY 3RD APRIL 2010

Coxhoe United 6 v Leam Rangers 0

A big thank you to Brodie Grayson and Paige Wilson this weekend for stepping into the role of goalkeeper you both did a very good job.

The team was a lot more competitive  this weekend and went out to win this game right from the off. We were trying a new a system  in this game which allowed Chelsea Thompson to control the defence on her own knowing that Sophie Whiting would come back and support her if needed , which she did excellently. We played four in midfield , which allowed Faye , Brodie , Plern and Sophie W  to experiment with cross over play which suited their passing play , with Sophie and Plern especially playing some lovely one two’s down the left wing. The girls kept possession most of the game and this allowed them to pressure the Leam goal with Sophie Tierney making sure that we went ahead with the first goal. The rest of the match followed in much the same vein with the defence of Chelsea and Brodie having very little to do. The rest of the goals came regularly with some excellent crosses from Faye and Danika.

Man of the match Plern Piercey

Goals Faye Mullen 4, Sophie Tierney 1,  Brodie Grayson 1,  Danika Stephenson 1

Coxhoe United 3 v Lumley Ladies 0

This is usually a very hard game against a very good side , however the size of the pitch ( very small) made it a scrappy game with little room for both sides to pass the ball. Coxhoe were very frustrated that they could not play their normal passing and flowing game , however they adapted the best  and Danika Stephenson got the first goal. The team kept pressing the Lumley defence and even though the game was not nice to watch the girls did what they had to with two more goals in the second half for Brodie and Faye .

Man of the match Faye Mullen

Goals   Faye Mullen 1,  Brodie Grayson 1, Danika Stephenson 1

SATURDAY 10TH APRIL 2010

Coxhoe United 5 v Ryhope 0

This again was played on a very small pitch so the girls had to be accurate with their passes. The team started off very strongly and within the first two minutes Sophie Whiting had thundered a shoot in from outside the penalty area. This set the pace for the game with the girls pressuring the Ryhope goal consently. Plern and Faye  showed some tremendous turns of pace on the wings to allow Sophie Tierney and Danika Stephenson to connect to their crosses to produce two more goals. In the second half the girls just kept up the pressure with Chelsea Thompson making sure that the balls did not come anywhere near our goal , and Sophie Whiting just continued to dominant the centre of the field. Plern Piercey got a great rebound to make the score 5 .

Man of the match Sophie Whiting

Goals Sophie Whiting 1, Danika Stephenson 2, Sophie Tierney 1, Plern Piercey 1

SATURDAY 14TH APRIL 2010

Coxhoe United 1 v Lumley Ladies 0

This was a very well balanced game with both teams liking to play a passing game. Coxhoe started strongly and did not let Lumley get comfortable. The girls challenged  for every ball and again Sophie W controlled the centre of the pitch sending some excellent balls out to Faye Mullen and Brodie Grayson on the wings . It was from one of these balls that led to Faye scoring a superb goal from the corner line and curling it into the back of the net. In the second half Lumley came out fighting and our defence had a lot more to do , however Chelsea and Holly  did a great job keeping them from making any real shots at goal. Beth Vasey in goal had a tremendous second half saving some akward shots and controlling the defence.

Man of the match Chelsea Thompson

Goals Faye Mullen

Coxhoe United 3 v Leam Rangers 0

Again the girls went out from the start to win this game from the off. They challenged  every ball with Plern, Sophie Tierney and Brodie in midfield creating big problems for the Leam Defence with their skill and pace on the ball. Danika Stephenson soon started the goals rolling with a lovely ball taken from a cross from Plern. In the second half Faye and Sophie W came on and continued to control the midfield with Sophie T creating havoc  for Leam with her skill on the ball. This produced a goal for her and later in the game Danika banged in another to complete the night.

SATURDAY 17TH APRIL 2010

Coxhoe United 3 v Stockton 0

This was a delight to watch with the girls playing some of the best football that we have seen from them, and it just shows how far they have all come from the days when we regularly lost 10-0 . Faye , Sophie W and Plern controlled the midfield with some beautiful play keeping possession until a hole opened up to make a break for goal. This pressure soon produced an opening for Sophie Tierney to hit the ball into the back of the net. In the second half Brodie and Paige Wilson moved into the midfield and kept up the pressure started in the first half. Brodie played some very mature football to read the ball early and take control to produce two excellent goals. This was a great performance by all the girls.

Coxhoe United 1 v Birtley Town 0

This was a very hard fought game with both sides very equal in their desire to win the game. Sophie W , Sophie T and Faye had to show all of their skill and determination to get the better of Birtley in midfield which they did eventually and then started to put the pressure on their goal. However Birtley have an extremely good goalie who managed to stop many shots on goal which would normally have found the back of the net. Just before the break Sophie W made a lovely pass out to Faye on the right wing, she then took on two players and took it into the corner and whipped it into the top left hand corner. A great goal. The girls continued to push in the second half but Birtley were not going to give up easily so Holly and Chelsea  had to work hard to stop the balls getting through.

SATURDAY 24TH APRIL 2010

Coxhoe United 3 v Beamish 1

The girls knew that this game was going to hard and physical and that they needed to dominate it from the whistle. This they certainly did and fought for every ball , even in the first ten minutes when Beamish did have some effective attacks the girls did not panic and marked tightly to get rid of the danger. They soon settled into a rhythm Faye , Sophie W and Plern playing some very exciting football in the midfield. The first goal came from a tremendous run up the left wing from Plern , who crossed it into Faye’s feet to find the back of the net. It wasn’t long before the second came from a lovely headed flick on by Sophie T and again found the boot of Faye . The team continued in the same vein in the second half working really hard to not give Beamish an inch with the third goal coming from a superb run from Faye right from the centre line , taking the ball into the corner and whipping it into the net. A great performance by everyone.

SATURDAY 1ST MAY 2010

Coxhoe United 3 v Ryhope 1

This was a very physical from the start with Ryhope trying to unsettle the team with some very hard tackles and challenges for the ball. For the first five minutes this worked with Coxhoe having to defend a barrage of shots on goal . Chelsea and Brodie did a great job stopping the shots and Beth in goal stayed focused to make sure any shots did not get past her. However, Coxhoe soon collected themselves and began to pass the ball maturely and intelligently with Sophie Whiting playing her usual controlling game in centre midfield setting Faye and Plern on superb runs up the wings. Ryhope soon realised that our wings were where our attacks started and poor Faye and Plern became the targets of some extremely strong, high tackles, resulting in having to sub Plern at half time despite her hard work. Faye got a goal near half time from a scramble in the goal mouth. The second half saw Coxhoe dominate , they went out strongly with Paige now on the left wing causing chaos with her fresh legs. Danika scored the next two goals with her being in the right place for a CF to hit the back of the net. Ryhope got one back in the dying minutes with Beth at full stretch  trying to make the save but her finger tips were just not long enough. This was a great performance from all the girls using their strength and skills to win the match.

SATURDAY 8TH MAY 2010

Coxhoe United 2 v East Durham 1

This was the crunch match for the Cup season as East Durham were only two points behind. It is always a hard ,competitive game between the two sides , but there was so much riding on this game. Coxhoe started strongly , but our goal was put under pressure right from the start , with Beth Vasey having to make a number of good saves to keep us in the game. Sarah Higgins had to go off after five minutes with her ankle still not back to full strength , so Paige Wilson took her place and used her pace and determination to strengthen the defence. East Durham took the lead after about ten minutes with a strong shot , which Beth saved but she could not the rebound. However , the girls did not drop their heads in fact they upped the pressure with Sophie Whiting making some excellent passes out to the wings so they could frighten Durham with their pace. Sophie Tierney playing striker did not allow East Durhams defence to settle constantly hassling them waiting for them to make a mistake. Our breakthrough came from a corner which Faye Mullen curled into the net to bring us even. In the second half Danika Stephenson came on and continued the job that Sophie T had done, she was everywhere trying to get a gap to score. East Durham fought hard to contain our determined players and a few late tackles were seen , but Faye and Paige got up from them to play even harder. The last few minutes were very exciting with both teams trying their hardest to win the match. Another corner came Coxhoe’s way and again Faye put it into the back of the net. This was an excellent result for the girls , with not one of them not giving their all. Well Played!!!

Coxhoe United 6 v Deerness 0

The girls had had a long wait between the two games and this showed. They started very slowly allowing Deerness several early shots at goal and time to play the ball. Danika Stephenson got the first goal to give us some breathing room. The second goal was an own goal after a scramble in the goal mouth. In the second half they started to settle down with Sophie W giving some much needed control in the midfield. We scored 4 more goals ,but to be honest it was one of the worst games of the season, but results matter , so the girls did their job.
